On top but still flop! Aug. 16th, 2005 @ 11:56 am
Its a great feeling to see IS Dept website listed by plone.org, the first Indian website to be recognized by the plone foundation! You get a feeling of pride and accomplishment when you have built the website from scratch. That's what is going through me...The most dissapointing thing is when you click on the ISE Dept link on plone.org, you will get a annoying message stating that the webpage cannot be displayed!

This is because the IS lab is undergoing total revamp and all the machines including the web server is now relocated to some 'unknown' place and the system administrator is making no attempts to keep the system running. I think Thejas must have got a nice experience about the 'mal'maintainence of the server by the system administrator and most of the times the WINGS website was never accessible. Sorry, thejas thought of reconstructing the WINGS website...Now I am helpless...

Placed!! Aug. 6th, 2005 @ 07:45 pm
So the wait of over two months since the inception of the placement season is over. Yesterday I got placed in Deloitte. That's the first company I attempted. It's a large US based MNC operating from Hyderabad and Mumbai. Totally 7 people were recruited.

The written test was quite ok. 22 of 245 got shortlisted for the interview and 7 of these finally got shortlisted. The shortlisted candidates along with the placement co-ordinators got a cool party in the Southern Star! We had a blast...

I am pretty relieved after weeks of uncertanities and wait. gotta chill now...

ploning all the way... Aug. 1st, 2005 @ 06:37 pm
"Plone?? What's that? Heared of Clone and Phone...but never plone"-Well this is the most typical reply which I get from people when I say I have been working on Plone CMS.

Content management systems are fast making a niche for themselves. Blogging is also an attribute of CMS. Web content management system have made rapid strides and are becoming fast popular. PHP Nuke, Drupal, Mambo server are some of the web CMS available. Out of all these I am accustomed to working on plone.

Web content management system or CMS for short facilitates the dynamic creation, updation, publishing of the data on the internet. CMS enabled websites support members to dynamically publish data as well as exchange data with other members. Offcourse "livejournal.com" is CMS enabled.

Plone is an open source GNU licensed CMS. It can be downloaded freely from www.plone.org If you are from the windows family there is a windows compliant version of plone, while linux and mac users have different version.

My first experience on Plone was when John Tanik (President,SEBE and NASA Fellow) appointed me as the reviewer of the SEBE website(www.sebe.biz). Well SEBE is a group of budding entrepreuners, corporates, professors and these guys are closely associated with NASA Marshall space flight center,USA. So, my job as a reviewer was something like publishing documents which are applied by the members for publication. So, everyday I used to login to the website and check for any pending documents and publish the necessary documents. This wasn't much of technical. In the background, I was going through the plone manuals on the net and trying to digest them.

Suddenly, the webmaster of SEBE Paul was down with academic chores and I found myself appointed as the webmaster of the website! Phew...It was just 10 days since I started working on Plone and Lo! I am the webmaster of the SEBE website. There were lots of things to do. Constatly have a news update, make arragements to cater to the articles related to SEBE's associates like techbirmingham, etc etc and offcourse to continue with the reviewer's job.

One day some where in Febraury Mahananda sir (Placement Officer,SJCE) shared with me his idea to have online test for SJCE students who are due for placement season as a part of student orientation program. Usually, written tests are carried by the placement cell to train the students for placements, my friends told me that hardly any college any karnataka offers online test facilities for students. I found this idea pretty fresh. I started contemplating on employing Plone to implement online tests. But with no idea of CGI programming or Java and with elimentary knowledge HTML it seemed to me that I am heading nowhere. Then, I suddenly got a idea that there must exist some third party product developed for Plone which can help in conducting online tests. Bingo! I came across LTOnline ploneware. Now, the only thing needed was a plone powered website which where the product needs to be deployed and interfaced. At, that time I was the webmaster of my personal website which was supported by a french agency. This was Plone powered. I sent a request to this agency to upload this product in my website. But, much to my dissapointment they refused and cited no reasons.

This left me pretty dissapointed and I thought maybe the time has not yet arrived for online test facilities to be provided to SJCE students and some day some one amongst my juniors will develop this facilty. I apprised John about this event and he instaneously suggested me that I can conduct online tests on the SEBE website for SJCE students. Yipeee...!! What a moment that was when I realized that this will herald a unique bond between a US no-profit organization and an indian academia. I apprised Mahananda sir regarding this development. He was ecstatic and immediately asked me to make a "Press-note" regarding the alliance. I was pretty surprised about the press-note and wasn't very keen on publishing this event in the newspapers. And then one sunday afternoon I got a call...mahananda sir was online. He said-"Damodar, come to the Times of india office within a hour! Get the press-note. I am waiting...". Oh God! never ever I had scripted any pressnote and had no idea how the format was and stuffs like that...so I was sitting infront of my desktop and quickly made a press-note. And seriously speaking it had come in very good shape. And I told myself that Bhanu's (Ed-in-chief,SJCE mag) decision to get me into the coll mag wasn't bad afterall...!

So the next few hours I was with mahananda sir and my friend ankit rushing from one office to other. When sir asked me to explain about the details regarding the online test to the TOI personell, I was a bit nervous and wasn't in my true form and some how managed to explain him...he didn't seem to be very intrested with the story and I thought maybe TOI will never publish this story. i was at my best in the deccan herald office. The correspondent was very impressed and excited about SEBE's association with NASA and he promised us that the story will find a prominent place in the education supplement of DH.

Eventually the SJCE-SEBE alliance story was published in all the national newspapers and in the local evening daily (Mysore Mail). The editor of Mysore mail Krishnavattam sir was so impressed with us that he insisted me to forward him a write-up regarding the alliance and all the "Inside story". He also insisted me to send him my photograph. I was pretty reluctant. But he was so keen that I had to succumb and as promised Mysore Mail dedicated half a page for the "Making of the SJCE-SEBE Alliance"!

Apart form all the media coverage, the online test witnessed 629 registerations from the sixth sem students! It was a big success. And the last stop is when i found that College Magazine listed me in the 'Achievers Section'. Leveraging the power of Plone...ploning all the way....
